Weekly Economic Update: December 4, 2017

Weekly Economic Update
December 4, 2017
The Markets (as of market close December 1, 2017)
Equities surged for much of last week until an abrupt decline midday last Friday culled some of the earlier gains. Nevertheless, of the major indexes, only the Nasdaq lost value from the prior week. The Dow led the way posting an impressive gain, followed by the S&P 500. Reports that the Senate was close to passing a tax reform bill may have heightened investor confidence as trading picked up during the week. While stocks rallied for the week, the price of crude oil (WTI) fell slightly from the prior week and the price of gold fell as well.
 Last Week’s Economic Headlines
  • The GDP increased at an annual rate of 3.3% in the third quarter. In the second quarter, the GDP increased 3.1%.
  • ConsNew home sales continued to increase in October.
  • The Census Bureau announced that the trade deficit in October was up $4.2 billion from September.
  • According to the IHS Markit, the manufacturing sector grew in November, but at a slightly slower pace than the previous month.
  • The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index®, which had improved in October, increased further in November.
  • The Manufacturing ISM® Report On Business® also showed manufacturing accelerated in November, but not quite as fast as in October.
  • Claims for unemployment insurance are on the upswing after falling the past few weeks.
Eye on the Week Ahead
The last week of November reveals some important economic information. The second report on the third-quarter GDP is out this week. The initial estimate in October showed the GDP increased at a 3.0% annualized growth rate. Also revealed this week is the report on personal income and spending for October. This indicator of inflationary trends is one of the economic reports relied on by the Fed in determining whether to raise interest rates.
We are also watching the final outcome of the The Tax Cuts and Job Act of 2017 as U.S. Congress attempts to reconcile it into law.  There are always winners and losers in anything that is created by Congress but BWFA sees a sustainable benefit to corporations, and many individuals, which could further stimulate the economy and stock growth.
