Gratitude is feeling and communicating appreciation for people, circumstances, and possessions in our lives. It allows us to cherish our present in ways that make us feel abundant rather than deprived. As a result, we become more motivated, less fatigued and, ultimately, better off.
Gratitude comes from the Latin gratus, meaning “pleasing; welcome; agreeable.” Gratus is also the root of grace. Its Proto-Indo-European root, gwere, means “to praise, to celebrate; to be in contact with the Divine.” In other words, being grateful is equivalent to feeling the presence of the Divine in our lives.
Research has shown that gratitude:

- Enhances wellbeing
- Deepens relationships
- Increases happiness
- Strengthens self-control
- Betters physical and mental health
- Strengthens morality
- Improves sleep quality
- Allows us to see the virtue, value and benefit in everything.
